NTP Service

Overview

In many applications, using NTP (Network Time Protocol) to sync device clocks is very important. Typically NTP can be accessed from any number of internet-based NTP providers. However, when a VPG is configured to disallow internet-bound traffic, NTP services also become inaccessible.

Soracom provides an NTP service at ntp.soracom.io, which is on-platform and can be accessed by Air devices even if the VPG does not allow internet-bound traffic.

For customers with applications that have especially high sensitivity to time, Soracom's NTP service uses Leap Smearing for handling leap second corrections. With leap smearing, the leap second is spread out over a period of time, so that the occurance of the leap second does not need to be accounted for during application development.
